Singing the fight song with my fellow soccer teammates on our Birnie Bus as we pulled into campus after every away game - most often under the cover of night. Still warms my heart... “Oh we will fight fight fight for dear old Colgate...!”

I ran cross country all 4 years and have always had the opinion that the conversations held on long runs were unconscious ways of processing our thoughts and feelings with teammates, often creating lifelong bonds. I still train over distances (biking with friends and family, etc.) and value that dimension of lifelong health and camaraderie that Colgate reinforced for me through dedicated athletic practices in all kinds of weather conditions.

It was a Colgate-Syracuse football game in 1954. I was a high school senior, my mother a Syracuse alum who was attempting to rouse my interest in applying there. She had arranged for an interview prior to the game with the Dean of Admissions who was a former classmate of hers. After the interview, he asked me who I thought was going to win the game. I replied by asking the day’s date. He replied, “the 13th”. I answered that alone should tell him! He turned to my mother and said, “if knows that much about Colgate he doesn’t want to come here.” Archbold Stadium was packed. Despite sitting on the Syracuse side behind their band, the small student section of maroon on the visitor side completely drowned out the stadium with the drawn out “Colgate, Fight Team Fight” when the team came on the field. Despite the lopsided score with number 32, Jim Brown leading the way, I was totally awed by Colgate never giving up to the very end – “that’s where I want to go to school Mom!”

In 1948, during my tenure as senior manager, varsity football, at Colgate, we played Northwestern in Evanston, a year following Northwestern's Rose Bowl appearance. The Chicago sportswriters' take on the game was "Colgate, an unknown small college patsy, comes in as a six or seven touchdown underdog." Well, wrong. We lost 39-20, very respectable, actually outgained them on the ground; and we earned the respect of all who watched. It was the real boost that Colgate needed in a difficult season.

"Growing up in Hamilton; having Colgate students living in our home; renting my bedroom during party weekends; attending sporting events, including an Army/Colgate football game at West Point where, at age 10, I got President Eisenhower’s autograph; being a “guest witness” when a Syracuse student had his head shaved (with a Block C being left on top) in the TKE house living room; attending many tailgate parties with my parents; summers at the Colgate Camp—all were part of my upbringing.

Having a father who was an ice hockey All-American sparked my desire to become active in the ice hockey program. Believe me, I could not skate. I spent four years on the managerial staff, and loved almost every minute of it—except when I fell down while walking across the Howard Starr Rink. I especially liked working with coaches Olav Kollevoll ’45 and Ron Ryan."
